Hi Lisa,
I first found you thru google on how to make baby rice cereal. It was a great receipe and I just tried on my 6 months baby boy tonite and he loves it (he just started on solid food on last thursday). I was confused whether to feed him commerical rice cereal (who knows whats the real ingredients in it :P) or make my own (not sure to use white rice or brown rice). You really saved me by wayching your video clip on ehow. you looked so confident while cooking that banana rice cereal; and that made me think...hmm....this lady really knows how to cook for baby food. So I tried and it worked. Thank you soooo much.
Another thing that I would like to ask you for comment is that should I feed my baby cooked applesauce or raw applesauce? Im afraid that once cooked, all the nutrients will be gone. But when feeding him raw, I felt that the apple meat is not soft enought for him now. And do I start with apple juice first or applesauce is fine too?? thanks~~~~

Does commercial rice cereal pose less allergic reactions as to baby's first solid food than the homemade?
Hi Pao=Yi,
Thank you for such kind words! Our mission is exactly to get babies eating wonderful homemade food, and you are truly an inspiration!
I'm so glad he loves it :)
About the apples, I would peel, core, slice and steam them - then puree them/strain them. If you cook the apples for a beginning eater it makes it easier to digest. You don't need to cook it a long time, maybe 10 minutes. Steaming will also help preserve it's nutrients!
Dear Paoyi,
We're going to check with our pediatrician on this one who happens to be a world-renowned allergist also. My suspicion is strongly that it makes no difference, but I want to be positive. If you think about it, all that's in homemade baby food is rice and water/breast milk/formula. I'm not sure what exactly goes into pre-made rice cereals!
Thanks guys, keep the questions coming!!!

Hi Lisa,
So nice to hear from you and appreciate the fast reply!!! I'm a first time mom without any experience, but however, trying my best of best to take care my little boy~~ However, my main concern for the homemade rice cereal was the lack of nutrients especially iron, since most of the commercial rice cereal powder are iron fortified. Is there a way to prevent or supplement it??? And my baby is in a very very low weight percentile rank (>5). He's now 6 months old and only weighs 13.2 lbs!! (He was born a low weight of 6 lbs tho) My pediatrian suggests to feed him egg yolk now to boost protein intake. (He's a 'lil vegan baby :P )But aren't babies have to wait till they are 8 to 10 months old for egg yolk?? Any suggestions and tips from Mom Lisa and Christin??
Thank you girls~~
Congrats & good luck on the new book!!
and.....keep the passion going ^^
ps. are there many vegetarian receipes for the little ones?
Pao-Yi
Sorry I mean the receipes from your new book~~
Well, I didn't feed my son eggs until he was eating proteins (about 7 months), but if your doctor says to go ahead, I would do the egg yolks. It's the egg WHITE that can cause allergies and is recommended that you wait until 1 year.
I would imagine that adding formula or your breast milk to the rice cereal will infuse a nice nutrient boost, as well as the egg yolks (soooo nutritious). Also, ask your doctor if your little one can digest Quinoa (the "super grain") - this may be a nice option...
I'm going to experiment around with egg yolks and see if I can come up with a 6 month old special recipe for you.
Regarding your veggie question....
We have lots of veggie recipes, but some include dairy, eggs...I'm not a huge fan of a very strict vegan diet for little ones (it's SO hard to get them everything they need), but add tofu, and it's possible to get all the nutrition they need.

Oh, by the way, use brown rice!! Not wild rice (which is something different than rice), but organic brown rice...it has more good stuff!
thank you thank you~!! oh i didnt explain clearly....of course he can have dairy and eggs~
and yes, i'm using organic brown rice for his cereal; try to use organic whenever possile~!
